In Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 2, mysterious red and blue lines have appeared on the map. It can be difficult to discern what they mean at first glance. They do not map out any paths or immediately visible elements, and players can walk along or cross these lines with no ill effects. However, these lines are actually a very important part of this season's main gimmick.
The subtitle of Chapter 3, Season 2 is Resistance, and the map's theme is exactly that. The IO, who have risen as the primary villains of the Fortnite universe ever since the end of the Invasion chapter, are now attempting a full-scale takeover of the island. IO soldiers are much more common here than in previous seasons, and they are occupying larger areas than they used to. They have even somehow removed Fortnite's building mechanic, preventing players from using one of their signature skills. However, a resistance led by The Seven has risen to fight against them, setting the stage for the season's storyline.
The red and blue lines are actually borders that indicate which faction is currently in control of the corresponding area. The areas that are enclosed by red lines are controlled by the IO, and the areas enclosed with blue lines are controlled by the resistance. A look at the map will reveal that the vast majority of the map is under IO control outside of the east beaches and a few small pockets along the island's edges. IO also happens to have control over some of Fortnite's best new landing spots, such as Command Cavern. There are also a couple of small areas that are outside of both red and blue lines. These areas are controlled by neither faction, but players can visit them regardless.

Before the end of the season, IO's dominance over the island will certainly have diminished as the ongoing battle intensifies. Depending on what other surprised Epic has in store for the season, Chapter 3, Season 2 could prove to have one of the most volatile maps that Fortnite has seen in some time, and a player can level up Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 2's Battle Pass fast if they can master it.
The red and blue lines on the Fortnite map are battle lines. Most of the time they will have little to do with the current match, but players would be wise to keep them in mind. If one has the need to deal some damage to IO's forces or take some of their tech, then knowing where they're patrolling is valuable information.
