Third Person ‘Halo Infinite’ Looks Like Zero Build ‘Fortnite’

First of all, you have to go to the xbox cloud gaming website. So when i saw a couple weeks ago that fortnite could be played on xbox cloud for free, i used my iphone to test it out. If you purchase the skin and then play a match of fortnite on the new hardware from microsoft, you’ll get access to the matte black master chief style.

A clip has been making the rounds on Twitter the past day or so that shows off a mod that turns Halo Infinite into a third person, over-the-shoulder shooter.

It’s not a new development. The clip is actually from a three month old video on Opulent Halo’s channel which you can watch below:

While certainly a little janky, the mod works surprisingly well, and I couldn’t help but keep thinking of how it reminds me of Zero Build Fortnite, given not just the third person perspective, but the Halo Infinite landscape on Zeta Halo, which really does resemble some aspects of the wooded areas of a Fortnite map.

It also just occurred to me that we can make a direct comparison because of course, Master Chief is also a licensed Fortnite crossover skin, having come to the game months ago. Here’s what that looks like:

A frequent point of debate is whether or not Halo Infinite should have launched with a battle royale mode, an argument that divided fans and streamers, mainly, and something that 343 dismissed outright well before launching, saying the only BR they were interested in was the Battle Rifle.

While I understand perhaps not wanting to be accused of trend-chasing, I think the game probably would have lent itself to a solid BR mode, and I think we’ve seen that shedding your traditional gameplay and branching out can work really well. I mean, look at what Call of Duty has accomplished with Warzone, now more popular than the regular multiplayer mode itself. That could have solved some of Halo’s player drop-off issues, I’d argue, and certainly would have boosted its presence on Twitch.

As for third person Halo? Nah, just nah. It’s a fun mod and a cool little experiment but I draw the line at giving Halo a third person option for anything but holding heavy weapons and such. It fundamentally changes too much about the game at its core, and even if they did do a battle royale someday, obviously they should stick with the first person perspective.

We are heading into the second multiplayer season of Halo Infinite at the beginning of next month, which will bring a Lone Wolves theme, new maps and modes and events. From there, we’ll see what the longer term plans hold for Halo, especially any that might involve returning to Zeta Halo as Master Chief himself for some more single player action.
